Today I’m excited to introduce you to Mike Rey, the owner of RVA Builders, a local residential remodeling company that does some pretty amazing work around in and around Richmond. Mike is passionate about his craft and the tradesmen that work with him and his passion is contagious. Enjoy!
Describe your business?
RVA Builders is a residential remodeling company focused on quality craftsmanship and outstanding communication. We consider our self a project based company focusing on creating a full plan for each project. The majority of our projects are kitchens, bathrooms, wall removals, and room renovations. Customer Focused, Community Driven.
How long have you been open?
What’s your favorite part about being a small business owner?
Relationships! I have the privilege to surround myself with people who bring out the best in each other. While I love the opportunity to build relationships with each customer, the relationships that impact me the most are the ones built with the crew members and subcontractors I work with day in and day out. We hold each other accountable to a high standard and in return have the opportunity to see each others best.
What is your biggest challenge right now? How do you hope to overcome it?
In our industry there is no real development or school setting to help provide a qualified work force. With the lack of training it’s hard to find dedicated tradesmen or women. With that development not being cultivated, in my opinion, society views the trades as a job rather than a career. Which limits my opportunity as a business owner to give each team member a career rather just a job. It’s difficult to offer employees any real benefits when the industry as a whole holds such low standards for the work force. I’m working to overcome these challenges by supporting my crew members to seek opportunity to grow – pick up some new technology, invest in further education, read about new building methods, take pride in what you do, etc. We try to partner with the local trade school and hire graduates. To be honest, I wish I was doing more to advocate for the trades, to train other people who want to manage in the industry, and just be present in the Richmond Building Community.
What are three random facts about you?
1). There is nothing better than a bike ride in the city.
2). I’m 100% a morning person. That first cup of coffee is so good!
3). My spirit animal is a wolf.
Aside from your business, what are you most passionate about?
Family. There is no greater joy than to be present with my family. I’m a proud parent
of two boys and married to an exceptional woman. They have supported me through this entrepreneurial adventure and loved me when I needed it the most. When the whole crew is together, nothing else really matters. It’s one of the only times that I feel like I can be fully present and not distracted.
What’s your favorite thing about RVA?
Friday Cheers. We love listening to live music and there is nothing better than getting the blanket out and sitting for a couple of hours on Brown’s Island. It’s such a neat scene with the James and the train tracks. It’s pretty family oriented so it’s easy for us to relax.
Best place to have coffee or meet a client and why?
Perk! I live and work in Bon Air, so Perk! is our local coffee shop. Not only as a business but as a consumer, I try to shop locally as much as possible. So I have to give a shout out to Perk! Plus they are the pick-up site for our CSA, they have an awesome lunch menu, and the people who own and work there are always so friendly.
One office supply or biz tool you can’t live without and why?
The Staedtler Home Planning and Layout Template. It’s a really convenient stencil set that allows me to hand draw basic sets of plans. If I’m working out a layout issue or want to give subcontractors a quick visual, for an over the phone walk through, this little stencil is awesome. Plus, I enjoy hand drawings, so it allows that creativity to flow when I’m not out in the field.
Favorite Richmond neighborhood and why?
Forrest Hill. Access to the James and the beautiful park.
