For this month’s client spotlight I’m excited to introduce you to Stacy Buchanan of Wythe Ave Consulting. From the moment I met Stacy, I knew two things – 1) she was destined to do something pretty awesome and 2) I was really going to enjoy having her as a client. Both assumptions have proven true and I’m so proud of where she is taking her business. Stacy is methodical, strategic and determined – her clients benefit not only from her expertise, but her keen sense to think ahead and see the big picture. Oh, and she’s a pretty awesome human too. Read on to learn more about her and Wythe Ave Consulting!
Describe your business?
Wythe Ave is a collaborative marketing strategy consultancy. We help small businesses create clear communication plans that support their growth goals. We also coach them to execute their plans, so that they don’t need us forever.
How long have you been open?
We officially launched in late April.
What’s your favorite part about being a small business owner?
Freedom. I spent nearly 10 years working in corporate marketing for a fortune 500 company. While it was an invaluable experience, I’m really enjoying making my own schedule and pursuing work that feeds my soul.
What is your biggest challenge right now? How do you hope to overcome it?
Patience. I want to have all the answers and feel like I’m rockin’ it everyday. But I also have to remember that I just launched. A wise woman advised me to stop comparing my beginning to someone else’s middle. I’m viewing these start-up insecurities as an opportunity to practice trusting that I’m on the right path.
What are three random facts about you?
- I am a rabid Clemson football fan! Go Tigers! #nationalchampions #ALLIN 2. I have 2 amazing, spirited young children and a hot husband who makes them laugh and shares in the housework (maybe family should have been #1?) 3. Years of ballet training turned me into a perfectionist. Practicing yoga and mindfulness are helping me reform.
Aside from your business, what are you most passionate about?
Early childhood development. I lead the board of Partnership for Families, a non-profit in Northside that facilitates a collaborative network of partners wrapping services around vulnerable families, so their children have the best chance for success in kindergarten and beyond.
What’s your favorite thing about RVA?
The amazing community of small business owners and entrepreneurs who are so supportive of each other. I love networking with them and hearing their stories. I continue to be inspired by their passions, the leaps they’ve taken, and the change they’re leading.
Best place to have coffee or meet a client and why?
Sugar & Twine. Every time I go, I bump into at least 2 people I know and meet another I didn’t.
One office supply or biz tool you can’t live without and why?
My gold gel pen. Even though I work in a field that’s predominantly digital, I’m a huge proponent of handwritten notes. I frequently send postcards or thank you notes to friends, partners and clients, and I always sign them in gold, which is one of my brand colors.
Favorite Richmond neighborhood and why?
The Museum District because that’s where I found my village. I have amazing neighbors who will watch my kids with no notice, give me their last egg for a recipe, gather in the yard for a glass of wine, or collaborate to throw a kick-ass block party.
What else would you like to share about yourself, your business or life in general?
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to help other small business owners! Many of my clients feel overwhelmed trying to do ALL THE THINGS – blogging, social media posts, networking events, Facebook live, mobile apps, podcasts…you name it. What they don’t realize is that spending a bit more time developing a clear marketing strategy can actually save them time and ensure that their communication efforts are more efficient and effective. I love working with clients to establish their growth goals, suggest tactics that support those goals and coach plan execution.
